A little farewell poster and a picture (they made a heart with their arms) from Class 2-5.
Personal favorite: “You’re Sick!” from Do-Yeon who keeps up with American sit-coms and knows an uncanny amount of English slang (though not always certain on when to time and use them…)
My role model is Einstein, because he research nuclear power which can kill many people, but he opposed to nuclear weapon because he respect human dignity. I want to research anti-matter which can kill many people too. I’m worried that if I become a particle physicist, I using anti-matter to kill people because I like money as well as dignity.
Final Week Memories: Mid-way through 4th period with class 2-5, two ‘absent’ students came through the door with a cake.
“My dream is to be a street light bulb”
“I will win the lottery. I will use the money to travel. The rest of money I will use to buy necessary item… car, house, beef store.” Beef Store?
“My dream is hacking USA information about aliens… If we cant achieve this work, maybe we will be killed by CIA Agents. If we achieve this work, we expose all things, and then we killed by agent and aliens.” Success or failure, his dream ends by being killed by an agent.
Last weekend under the Fulbright contract in Korea; a last getaway to Jeju.
Scooters, sand, and sun; one of the best experiences of the year.
The homestay mom runs a daycare/kindergarten. Most kids go home a little after 5; but little 가현’s mom sometimes works late so the home stay mom brings her up to the apartment while she gets dinner ready for the family.
She usually sits quietly on the couch and nibbles on snacks; I’ve never heard her say a word, she just makes faces. And yes, she ate that whole bag of chips.
In leading up to their final exams I gave my students self study time during my class periods. Here’s how class 1-4 spent it…
How we celebrated July 4th:
A gathering of the Jeollanamdo’ers in Gwangju for a little BBQ + night hang-out next to the river.
The seafood dinners have been frequent over the past two weeks: 억인 the older homestay brother who has been on break from the army the past week, requested seafood and sashimi as his last dinner with the family. Pictured above, the main plate features sea cucumber (brown stuff in the middle), sea urchin (orange), abalone, and assorted shellfish. Followed by 농어 which the family eats quite often when eating sashimi out (figured out that its Suzuki). Topped off with a crawling plate of live octopus, and fish soup.
Sunday late afternoon: Hanging out w 성현.
Sunday afternoon out w the family.
Took a drive across the newly opened Mokpo 대교 Bridge, and had a 백숙 lunch.
Class 1-7. These guys gave me such grief this semester. Especially the two I have my hands around. I will look back on them fondly.
Two more weeks left.
And yes, that is a sign in the back that reads “I love black people”
Seok Min (L) and Young Ryun (R). I see these students more than any others at Deogin. They often come into the English office 4-5 times a day to hang out and help out with errands for Mr. Gong (fellow English teacher in the same office) during the passing periods between classes. They are each other’s best friends and often stick to themselves among the crowds at Deogin. Both are in the lowest level classes and speak minimal English, but make efforts to communicate with me every day, every passing period.
Deogin runs an orphanage for small children in a separate building on the school’s large campus. Many of these children eventually attend Deogin or Hyein (the neighboring girls high school) when they become old enough. Young Ryun is one of these students.
